The Last Emperor TRUE TO THE GODS

4d 15h ago by piefed.social/u/PugJesus in roughromanmemes@piefed.social from media.piefed.social

Explanation: Julian the Apostate was the last pagan Emperor of Rome. Though raised as a Christian, he rejected the faith early in life and converted to a more traditional form of Roman religion, which was heavily persecuted by the Christian authorities at the time which controlled the Roman Empire, despite Christians still being a distinct minority of the population.. When Julian ascended to the position of Emperor, he openly proclaimed his paganism and instituted tolerance for all faiths, including not just Christianity and paganism, but also Judaism, Manicheanism, and Zoroastrianism (which were also persecuted by Christian authorities), attempting to revive the pluralist polytheism of the earlier Empire at the expense of Christianity's monopoly on state power.

He would die during an ill-fated campaign in Persia, and his Christian successors would return to the practice of persecution of pagans.
