Fixed my girlfriends icemaker

My girlfriends icemaker suddenly stopped working the other day and since I had a day off today, I figured I could try and fix it.
After some troubleshooting, it seemed like the fan stopped working, so I grabbed an old PC fan that just so happened to be the same size, wired it in, and presto, one less thing in the landfill and a happy gf.
I do love an easy fix.
There's a special pleasure in fixing things.
My toaster has an intermittent problem with popping up too soon, but every time I'm about to take it apart it starts behaving again.
When mine does this I threaten to give it a bath.
Make sure you're in there first to keep the water level high.
Years ago we had an old toaster that behaved inconsistently. Pop too soon then burn the toast. One day my fuse was too short and I wadded up the burnt toast and slammed it into the sink. Threw out the toaster and researched enough to buy another that we still use today.
Ever since that day, if I am perturbed, I am asked, “Are you going toastal?”
Me and my dad have talked about it before and you're absolutely right. Being able to fix somehing is just a great feeling.
And honestly, I bet if you take it apart and clean it, it'd probably continue behaving for you.
This is why I keep telling myself to keep old electronic things. Because, "you never know when you might need it." I'm glad someone out there with a 'similar' mindset is fixing things with spare/old parts.
I recently found out about libraries across the U.S. that host 'Repair Cafes,' 'Fix It Fairs,' 'Fix It Clinics,' and it's been wonderful to hear about people coming together to help keep unnecessary things from going to the landfill. It might be a good outing for you, if you can find one nearby. Just a thought.
Good on you for troubleshooting it, instead of just throwing it away.
Everyone always gives me grief for keeping old stuff like this, but I bet i can find a use for just about anything. I try to keep what I think will be useful and I really just love fixing things if I can.
And that does sound interesting, maybe when I have some more spare time, I'll look into that.
Oh man. Here are several thoughts of why people give someone grief about keeping spare parts, and odds and ends.
- They wouldn't know what do to with them, and so they project their decision onto you, to not keep the parts and things.
- They don't want you to out shine them. They don't want you to do something that they believe they can't do well or at all. And so they might be casting judgement on you, to try and prevent you from doing that thing.
- They are under the influence of the general media that pumps them with ideas to just continue to consume. 'You deserve something new.' 'You don't want to deal with the hassle of repairing that.' 'It would be easier to just buy a new one.'
- They think you're making a mess or will make a mess in the future. And for reasons it seems, only they know, the keep looping this thought and feeling.
- They genuinely want to make sure that you don't overwhelm yourself with too many things to save for these random moments of need.
- They were brought up in a household that wasn't like what you were brought up in. Having boxes of things stored here and there is odd to them.
Don't let them dictate your happiness, interest or hobby. Set up boundaries with them if you have to. Tell them that you enjoy the event, experience and task at hand, and they should seek one something in life that does that for them.
Well, that was an insightful collection of reasons I hadn't thought of. Thanks.
Oh yea, I'll do what I gotta do, but its nothing so serious. Most people in my life know I like to tinker so when I say they give me grief, I mean it in a more joking way. Honestly, people will give me things they think i might wanna play with. Mostly old tech. And they like when I'm there to fix things so they get it.
I'm very blessed with good people in my life who understand my "compulsion" lol
Nice work. Small refrigeration units like this are surprisingly capable and interesting little devices. Take good care of it!
After experiencing how easy everything is to get to in this thing, you bet I'm gonna try and keep it running for a long time!
That's not dull, that's being a lifesaver.
