Folk Emerging: stone age nomadic 4X strategy, demo out

hey I'm a solo gamedev and I recently launched the demo for Folk Emerging.
if you're into turn-based strategy games like Civilization and enjoy in-depth characters, cultures, and ecosystems, then this might be for you!
curious to hear what folks around here think
I've always loved the beginning of a Civ game, but kinda hated how bogged down the middle and late game get. So if this gives the feeling of early civ games, I'll probably love it.
nice! yeah this is very much inspired by the early part of Civ, and the many hours I spent playing Civ 2 and 3 as a kid :)
Ok, right off the bat the nested tooltips is a really cool system.
glad you like it. i must credit At The Gates, which pioneered it afaik, and games like Old World that have improved on it over time
what is 4X strategy?
It’s a specific type of strategy game in which you: eXplore your surroundings, eXploit the natural resources, eXpand your empire, and eXterminate any competition. Think like the CIV games.
@athatet gave a great summary, and the Civ games are the biggest mainstream example of 4X games. there are many sub-genres and lots of games that use it as a foundation but extend it in various ways, and Folk Emerging does that too by centering around nomadic gameplay and complex ecosystems
so I'm currently playing Foundation, I played Civilization a bunch and Civ2 a bit but mostly avoided that kind of game in favor of 3rd Person Shooters and like.
I will give your demo a go soon
ah i loved Civ 2 :) could never get my hands on the original Civ 1 though. and thanks!
Stone age nomadic 4X is fresh. Most 4X games end up as city builders with borders—nomadic shifts the whole economic model.
true, one of impacts on the resource economy, for example, is that here you don't have stockpile limits, but you have carrying capacities, so if you have more than you can carry it gets left behind when you move
What does 4x mean?
This is an extremely cool concept; I hope to be able to give it a shot soon!!!
thanks :) if you do, lmk what you think, i'm actively updating the demo so all feedback is much appreciated
We'll see if I can get it running, my only personal machine right now is an old laptop running linux so I'll have to try WINE...if it works at least you'll know the basics are real solid to work even emulating windows on old hardware :P
ah i fear there might be some performance issues, but definitely lmk if it runs and if so at what FPS :)
for sure for sure, would never hold my own jank against the software lol just how life circumstances go sometimes!
oooh I'm gonna try this on my days off this weekend
thanks, excited to hear what you think
Looks good, I'll try it out tonight. This sorta thing is my normally my jam.
glad to hear, let me know what you think! either here or in the feedback survey (link in the main menu)
Good luck! I am pretty busy right now, so don't think I will be playing any games, but never say never!
