If there is one thing the current timeline has shown us clearly is that our fellow humans are so much more dumb and selfish than we could have ever imagined with our feeble human brains.

The similar response to COVID-19 mask mandates didn't initiate a thing that happened decades earlier.

"Presaged" would be better, both timewise and because modern authorities should have seen it coming.

Yes, we forgot how much social unrest the first mask policies caused. This is just China, but my feeling is that the lawlessness of the Depression in America had to do with the fallout from masking policies. Also the prevalence of masks (gas and otherwise) in interbellum Germany boosted the conservative jingoism that led into fascism and WW2.

Look at what mask and quarantine policies have caused in America today. We've sped things up nowadays through technology and communications. The kids who grew up under mask mandates and quarantines, the moment they became adults, were essentially feral and lawless.
