Even in the utopian future where all our needs are met, we still need a union.
I mean, the ferengi do. Starfleet, and by extension earth, are just supportive bystanders in that episode, who dont even use money any more.
We still have a monetary system outside of Earth, though I'm not sure if the strict barter system extends to member factions.
The welfare (and comparative well being) of the Federation workforce rests in the hands of the most important person in Starfleet history.
