AI slop mugs hitting the thrift store shelves

I found a matching listing on Amazon (with the expected deluge of one- and two-star reviews); I won't link it because fuck Amazon, but here are the two prominent product pictures:

My favorite part is the inexplicable extra angle on the top book that made it into the actual cup.
Even the AI version looks like crap to me. The weird corners and angles at the rim would make it impossible to drink from comfortably.
acting like the AI version looks better than the real thing. bro this still looks like ass
I think they're all actually pentagons to round the mug better
“Gifts from companies that used Al to make them look much better than reality did are already appearing in thrift shops post-Christmas.
These "Al slop gifts" arrived sometimes barely resembling what was in the Al-generated ad, and recipients apparently wasted no time dropping them off at Goodwill.
Al gifts were a huge issue this year, fooling older generations in droves.”
I'd much rather call this "false advertisement by AI" or something like that, since it's not the gifts themselves that are AI, but that's just semantics I guess. It's shitty either way and I hate it. :D
Yeah that makes it way clearer. I didn't know if it meant it was designed by AI or what
Maybe they take the AI generated picture and give it to the AI design program and say design a real thing that looks like this.
That’s a really good point.
I felt so bad because our mom got these AI prints made of all of our dogs doing silly things this year. Like her heart was in the right place but holy shit please don't. Right into the storage unit as a "memento" of 2025 I guess.
Scammers are making bank off the shitty theft machines that's for sure
I got an AI slop book for Christmas this year. I checked Amazon and someone spent $10 on this piece of shit. Cant help but feel like this is going to be more and more common very soon where buying anything has a high chance of just being a completely POS fake product.
Somebody I know got a t-shirt with the ad photo of the t-shirt printed on the back, if that makes sense.
I know people who had this happen last Christmas too. Mugs that were supposed to be made out of (or at least look like) quartz geodes.
Yes, this is the one my friend’s mom fell for. They were supposed to be these gorgeous mugs made out of crystals for $50 each. They were complete trash 3D printed plastic.
I think I saw somewhere recently that microplastics in the brain are a factor in increasing cases of alzheimers. This seems like it's gonna become a feedback loop.
Goodwill is gonna be full of slop puzzles if it isnt already.
I remember when goodwill was so much fun, awesome electronics for rock bottom prices. They've ruined it now. We'll, the internet ruined it, but yeah.
Garage sales are something kids will never get to experience either. Man it was fun getting an entire NES with 15 games and 2 controllers for 5 dollars. And a snowblower for 10 dollars.
I don’t get it. How does Ai make a slop mug?
So the images for these mugs were created with AI and the mugs themselves are super ugly plastic 3D printed things. A mother of a friend fell for this.
See OP's comment. This is a real, shitty mug that was presumably advertised with an way-better-looking AI image.
Please don't call it slop, these are Microsoft cups or something
Nahh it was renamed to 365 Cupilot
heh
I already was curious how the mug would look like irl. It disappoints as expected.
This looks like it's made of glass? I've never seen 3d printing look like this, maybe resin, but not multicolored like this
Might be 3d-printed mold cast up to working with glass. I’ve seen this done for ceramics and metals as well.
Somebody probably generated AI slop and then slapped it on Amazon or Etsy and only after they received the order sent it to someone else to make it.
Nooo, I was just in Goodwill yesterday and didn’t think to be on the lookout for slop!
